A slender perennial with a single flowering scape 15-60 cm tall, growing erect from a sub-globular, solid tuber and a second withered one.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) [widespread but fairly local], in woods, field border and grassy banks in calcareous districts scattered throughout lowland England and in a few places elsewhere.

Fleurs : petites, espacées, en long épi grêle ; divisions extérieures verdâtres, oblongues, étalées en croix, les 2 intérieures linéaires-filiformes, brun pourpre, veloutées; labelle plus long que les divisions extérieures, obovale-oblong, brun pourpre velouté, marqué au centre d'une tache bleuâtre glabre presque carrée, trilobé vers le milieu, les lobes latéraux oblongs-étroits, le moyen grand bilobé gynostème obtus, sans bec.

Flowers: 20 mm long, 10 mm wide, 4-9 in a lax, elongated, narrow raceme subtended by linear bracts which are longer than flower; outer perianth segments yellow-green, lanceolate; inner purple-brown, short, linear; labellum long, somewhat triangular, ovoid and not very convex, purple-brown, downy, with pale markings and two oblique, triangular, lateral lobes, the terminal one bifid without an appendage; anther column with no appendage above the stamen;
